| Are we listening? Are we understanding?
Have we been picking and choosing from the teaching ofJesus Christ?
In John 13:13-15 Jesus states, "You call me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." Having a servant spirit must start some place and this example in the life of Christ is a good place to start. During His ministry, Jesus had to deal with this question of who is the greatest? Remember at one point as this question comes up He calls unto Him little children and says, "for such is the kingdom of God". Matt 18:1-3 Other forms of the question brings Christ to saying to his disciples, Whosoever would be greatest let him be the servant of all." Matt 23:11 Christ's Kingdom on this earth is made of individuals. Individuals who, in some cases, are looking to be sure they are the greatest. It seems that if we look closely enough we can see Christians shoving Christians aside for their own benefit. We see denominations in conflict over who is right and who is not, who has the corner of influence and who needs to change. Being a servant does not seem to end the equation of our thinking. Because of this we have splits in churches, splits in families and friends. We easily forget the example of Christ. He, our Teacher and Lord, came to serve, not to be served. As the world looks at this conflict in the household of believers, what are they supposed to think? As believers in Christ we are to follow our Lord's example and set the example to others by serving and not trying to be Master. Are we really listening and understanding what
Jesus, our Lord, is showing us by His example. Will there be those who will take advantage of our service? Of course. But that is not what our Lord is concerning Himself about. We are to serve regardless of how it is taken by those we are called by Him to serve. It is His Holy Spirit that will take our service and glorify Jesus so that men and women will be led to the love of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. To place a capstone of understanding on our Lord's example Paul states in Philippian 2:3-5, "Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better that themselves." Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." To share your belief in Christ, Serve some one today. Let Christ lead you and you will be blessed. By Chaplain / Larry Long |
